Moving Forward in Public Speaking: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start Small:

I began by speaking in familiar environments, such as sharing testimonials in church and participating in class presentations. These small steps helped me to build my confidence gradually.

  • I encourage you to start with small speaking engagements, such as speaking in front of a group of friends or family (especially extended family).

  • Join small groups or clubs where you can practice speaking in a more comfortable setting and gain a little confidence.

2. Preparation is Key:

Recognizing the importance of thorough preparation, I started by rehearsing my speeches and presentations meticulously. Knowing the material inside out significantly alleviated anxiety.

  • Understand that knowing your material inside out can help alleviate anxiety. It can give you some form of confidence in what you are doing.

  • Use positive affirmations. Tell yourself you can do it. Try to overcome all your negative thoughts.

  • While preparing, visualize yourself on the stage, in front of several people. See yourself there.

3. Practice Regularly:

Regular practice, whether in front of a mirror or recording myself, became a routine. Joining groups and clubs where I could speak in a supportive setting contributed to my comfort and proficiency.

  • Make videos of yourself speaking and watch the video to see how you do or what you can do better. Pretend you are speaking in front of many people.

  • Practice mirror speaking. Watch your every movement as you speak. Correct your stance and posture as you do.

  • Practice speaking and imagine your audience are maybe familiar faces or funny faces or anything that will keep you at ease.

4. Learn from Others:

Inspiration from successful speakers and learning from their experiences played a crucial role in my journey. Reading books and listening to others talk provided valuable insights and practical tips.

  • Join public speaking groups, learn from other members of the group, and reach out and ask for tips.

  • Attend events. Learn from those on stage. How they talk, how they present, what you feel they are doing wrong, what you feel they are doing right, and use those to make yourself better.

  • Read stories of how other shy people started too. Those help. Knowing that others have done it tells you, you can do it too.

5. Embrace Mistakes:

Understanding that mistakes are part of the learning process, I gradually became more open to taking risks and learning from setbacks. Especially when starting out, you will definitely make mistakes. You are in an unfamiliar setting, you are outside your comfort zone, so give yourself a break. Have a positive attitude towards your setbacks. Learn from your mistakes and try not to make the same mistake over and over again.

6. Gradual Exposure:

I progressively exposed myself to larger audiences, applying for speaking opportunities at virtual and physical events. Each experience contributed to building my confidence. So if you are shy, start small, but do not remain small. Once you are comfortable with small, take the bold step and try something a little bigger than small. And keep growing from there.

7. Celebrate Achievements:

Celebrating even the smallest achievements along the way is essential. Recognizing my personal growth and progress served as a motivation for me to keep moving forward.

Conclusion

In conclusion, overcoming shyness to become a proficient public speaker is a journey of self-discovery and continual growth. With dedication, regular practice, and a supportive mindset, anyone, even the shyest among us, can develop the confidence to speak in public. Just believe in yourself.
